Luminous carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds?
We present ground-based 3 μm spectra of obscured Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars in the Magellanic Clouds (MCs). We identify the carbon stars on the basis of the 3.1 μm absorption by HCN and C2H2 molecules. We show evidence for the existence of carbon stars up to the highest AGB luminosities (Mbol = −7 mag, for a distance modulus to the LMC of 18.7 mag). This proves that Hot Bottom Burning ...
متن کاملBoreal forests, aerosols and the impacts on clouds and climate.
Previous studies have concluded that boreal forests warm the climate because the cooling from storage of carbon in vegetation and soils is cancelled out by the warming due to the absorption of the Sun's heat by the dark forest canopy. However, these studies ignored the impacts of forests on atmospheric aerosol. We use a global atmospheric model to show that, through emission of organic vapours ...
متن کاملThermal and Dynamical Evolution of Primordial Gas Clouds On the Formation of First Luminous Objects
We investigate the thermal and dynamical evolution of primordial gas clouds in the universe after decoupling. Comparing the time-scale of dynamical evolution with that of fragmentation, we can estimate the typical fragmentation scale. We propose the following scenario of the formation process of first luminous objects consisting of large number stars. First, by pancake collapse of the overdensi...
متن کاملThe ionizing sources of luminous compact HII regions in the RCW106 and RCW122 clouds
Context. Given the rarity of young O star candidates, compact HII regions embedded in dense molecular cores continue to serve as potential sites for peering into the details of high-mass star formation. Aims. We uncover the ionizing sources of the most luminous and compact HII regions embedded in the RCW106 and RCW122 giant molecular clouds, known to be relatively nearby (2−4 kpc) and isolated,...
متن کاملLmc Microlenses: Dark or Luminous? Subject Headings: Dark Matter – Galaxy: Halo – Gravitational Lensing – Mag- Ellanic Clouds
Zhao has proposed that the microlensing events observed toward the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) could be due to faint stars in a dwarf galaxy or tidal debris lying along the line of sight to the LMC. Zaritsky & Lin claim to have detected such a structure which, they believe, could account for most of the observed microlensing optical depth. Here I show that a large-area surface-brightness map m...
